Hemp and cannabis are two varieties of the same plant species, Cannabis sativa. However, there are significant differences in their uses and the amounts of the psychoactive compound THC they contain. Hemp plants contain low levels of THC (less than 0.3%), while marijuana plants are grown for their high THC content (usually above 5%) and used for medicinal or recreational purposes. Hemp contains low levels of THC as well as other minor cannabinoids including CBD.
